OCTOBER 2009 WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Wednesday October 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th – 7pm to 9pm
Conceptual and Creative Photography – Jordan Miller instructor $119
Life Long Photographer Jordan Miller brings this series of 4 classes that will help to stimulate your inner photographer by awakening your creativity while interpreting and expressing how you see the world in your own unique way. Each week you will conceptualize an idea in class, and coupled with exercises, Jordan will help you develop those ideas. Then over the week you will practice those ideas and exercises, and bring your images to share at the next class. Jordan will critique the prior week’s assignment, and help evolve those into practice. (Note that this is a 4 week class.) Please bring a laptop and camera to each class.
Thursday October 8th – 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Legal Principals for Photographers – Tony Zinnanti, Esq. instructor $59
Prepare to learn all the various laws that affect you as a photographer. You will understand the basic copyright laws that are important to know, when you need a model release and a property release. Can the mall security kid tell you that you are not allowed to shoot in the mall? What are your rights on the street?? These are questions that every photographer should know and understand before you go shooting.
Saturday, October 10th – 9am to 4pm
Portrait Lighting and Posing – Ted Dayton instructor $99
Join Ted for a hands-on workshop as he walks you through the art of studio lighting techniques and posing. But most valuable of all: how to stay out of trouble by knowing what NOT to do. Please bring your camera and laptop, as this is a hands-on class. You will be taking photos of subjects you pose. We will have an important segment on editing and identifying the very best images from your session, and then some keys to finishing them like a pro.
Thursday October 15th – 7pm to 9:30pm
Composition and Inspiration – Ted Dayton instructor $49
Ted will discuss his philosophical approach to image-making, combined with time-tested principals of photographic composition to help you develop your own vision. He will cover effective shooting tips and provide you with a fun list of self-assignments to get you thinking about photography in ways you haven’t before. Feel free to bring three digital images and get comments from Ted in this inspiring and unique look at the making of great photos.
Friday, October 16th – 7pm – 9pm
Friday Night Foto Jam – $5
Come hang out with your fellow photographers in a casual atmosphere and bring your laptop! We will layout tables, chairs and power strips. Work on images; help others. We will have music and light snacks as well, so come join us for a casual evening of fun, photos, and camaraderie.
Saturday, October 17th – 9am to 4pm
The Magic of Off-Camera Flash – (Day 1) Ron Brewer instructor $99
Day one lets you know why you would even want to move the flash off of your camera, and then shows you exactly how to do it. Understand the difference between on-camera and off-camera flash and the magic that happens when you go off-camera. Learn about Speedlights vs. studio strobes and which you should use when. Understanding camera sync speeds and sync modes. This is a hands-on class, so please bring a camera, flash and a wireless trigger or sync cord. (We will have a few available to share).
Note that both days are available independently.
Sunday, October 18th – 9am to 4pm
Getting your Flash Off-Camera with the Nikon Creative Lighting System – (Day 2) Ron Brewer instructor $99 ($75 if enrolled in Day 1 as well)
Day 2 is for Nikon shooters or those wanting to learn the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS). CLS is a function already built into most Nikon cameras, giving you the power and control of off-camera speedlights (newer Nikon flash models) right from your camera. You will learn how to use the CLS wired or wireless, see the power of TTL (yes, even when wireless), how to control your flash power remotely from your camera, and how to shoot even in a studio setting with just speedlights. This will be a hands-on class, so please bring your Nikon camera and Nikon off-camera flash. Also note that if your Nikon Camera does not have a built-in flash, you will need a SU-800, SB-800 or SB-900 to act as a commander. (We will have a few available to share).

How to Win at Print Competitions – David Green instructor $25
If photography is an epic poem, Print Competition is a sonnet: It has a structure, rules, and rhyme scheme all its own. In this workshop, award-winning photographer David Green shares his insights on what it takes to do well at print competition, and why sometimes even a great photo may not do well. We will discuss presentation, composition, balance, printing techniques, subject matter, naming, and all the other elements that go toward scoring a much-desired Award of Merit or even more. SCVPA print competition is November 10, 2009.

Night Photography Basics – David Green instructor $59
Whether you want to take pictures of star trails, the moon, cityscapes or even moonlit landscapes, this class will give you the knowledge and describe the tools you need to begin playing with night photography. In addition to learning to shoot with available light, we will discuss using speedlights, painting with light, and other fun techniques. Just in time for Halloween! Bring your camera and a tripod if you have one, and prepare to head outside for some hands-on practice.
Saturday, October 24th – 9am to 5pm
Hollywood Style Lighting – Mike Kubeisy instructor $199
Have you always wanted to light talent on a set like they do in the Hollywood movies? Well, here is your chance to learn lighting from one of Hollywood’s busiest show shooters who works on the sets of shows like The West Wing, CSI Las Vegas, CSI New York, JAG, Bones, Chuck, and Dragnet to name just a few. Mike will teach you all the deep dark secrets of Hollywood as you learn how to light like a pro. We will create a set lighting using studio strobes, gels and many other fun things, not to mention learn how to light for a Hollywood movie poster. You will shoot a model using the lighting created. Please bring your camera. Limited enrollment, so don’t delay. (Note: 15% discount for NAPP Members)

Taking Your Photoshop to the Next level With Layers and Layer Masks – David Green instructor $79
White reveals, black conceals? What the heck does that mean? Learn the magic of layer masks, the not-so-secret Photoshop tool that all the pros use. Apply fine adjustments to a small part of an image, combine multiple images into a single composite without ever destroying any part of the originals, retouch skin without affecting clothing, give yourself the power of infinite undo, even if you save and close an image, and much, much more! Once you start using layer masks, you won’t be able to stop. Almost every image you edit can be edited better with layer masks. Please bring your laptop and prepare to follow along in this hands-on workshop. Bring a sack lunch and an image you want to edit if you want to work on an image through lunch. (Some Photoshop knowledge is recommended.
Tuesday, October 27th – 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Getting Started in Photoshop – David Green instructor $59
So now that you have taken all of these great photos, now what? Well let’s sit down and understand all the basics of editing with Photoshop. This entry-level class will describe everything from how to open your images, to basic image editing, the tools palette, basic layers, adjustments, filters, simple techniques that will improve every image, and a few advanced tricks that are easy to learn. Bring a laptop with Photoshop CS3 or CS4 and prepare to follow along. A pen tablet, such as a Wacom is also recommended, but not necessary. (Although many of the above methods will work in Elements, Elements will not be covered).

Mount, Mat and Present – A Critical Skill for Photographers – Tony Zinnanti instructor $59 (includes materials cost)
Presentation of work is critical to a photographer’s success. This workshop addresses post-print preparation and presentation of your work. You will be introduced to the “dry mount” and learn proper dry mounting techniques for mounting prints on backing board. You will then learn to cut your own single and double beveled mat in preparation for framing. Finally, you will learn about glass types and proper lighting for display of finalized work. This workshop will teach you to turn your prints into dazzling gallery showpieces! Materials: Your enrollment fee will include 1 mat board and dry mount tissue. You should bring 1 print that will fit into a 16×20 mat, and you can bring a 16×20 frame for your final presentation.
