MARCH 2010 WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Thursday, March 4th - 7pm – 10pm
Photography Series – David Green instructor, $69
This series of four workshops is a voyage of discovery into the fundamentals of good photography, so you can become not just a better photographer, but start enjoying your photography more. The series is broken down so that you can take one or take them all. Each class is a discrete unit. Recommended prerequisite: Basic DSLR Camera. If you already know the basics of how to use your camera, then prerequisite will be waived.
Photography 101 – Using your camera
Do you want to shoot landscapes? Portraits? Nature? Sports? Pure Art? Macro? Everything? Now that you know how to use your camera, let’s optimize how you use it to get the shots you want. We’ll discuss the equipment and techniques you need to get the shots you want, and get them right, every time. We will explore when to shoot manually, when to shoot automatic, and the settings that will help improve your shots. (Part 2 on 3/11, Part 3 on 3/18 and Part 4 on 3/25/2010).
Monday, March 8th – 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Basic DSLR Camera – Mel Carll instructor $129 for all 3 sessions (Part 1 of a 3 part workshop). SESSION SOLD OUT. NEXT SESSION START 4/12/10.
This 3 session workshop will focus only on the camera. We will start session 1 at the beginning with camera modes, aperture, shutter, and ISO. What these mean, and where they are on your camera. We will also discuss how they work together to create the photos you are looking for and then talk about what to work on during the days between sessions. This is a hands-on class, please bring your DSLR camera to class. This class is not geared toward point and shoot camera. (Part 2 will be held on 3/15 and Part 3 on 3/22/2010)
Wednesday, March 10th – 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Mastering Social Networking and Social Media – David Saffir instructor $109 for both evenings (Part 1 of a 2 part workshop)
This workshop walks you step by step through the process of building your presence on the internet. This is based on real-life experience among photographers over the past year. It is relevant and current. (Part 2 will be held on 3/17/2010).
You’ll learn about:
- How, and why to get started now
- The most important thing to do first to give you a strong start
- Building a plan and timeline to guide your work
- Keeping costs down, and impact high
- How your website or blog can help you – or hold you back
- How to use – and how not to use – Facebook, Twitter, Flickr
- How to identify, and leverage photography related networks on the web that are targeted to your key customers.

Photography 102
Lighting is everything in photography… but so is shadow. Whether you are shooting at the Grand Canyon, in a studio, or on the street, you can’t get a good shot if the lighting isn’t right. This workshop will reveal the secrets of good lighting, whether you are shooting available light, continuous studio light, or with strobes (both on and off the camera).
Monday, March 15th – 6:30pm to 9pm

This 3 session workshop will focus only on the camera. We will start session 2 from where we left off in session 1 with a review, then on to depth of field, lens selection and white balance. Tuesday, March 16th – 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Still Life Photography, Lighting and Photoshop – Ted Dayton instructor $129 for both evenings (Part 1 of a 2 part workshop)
Bring your camera to this stylistic and technical workshop that will include a slide presentation and discussion of lighting theory for subjects of all kind and then an in-depth demonstration of lighting techniques for various objects. Take pictures in the studio with Ted’s one-on-one input and then edit and process in Photoshop during part 2. The skills learned during this workshop are applicable to all types of photography. (Part 2 will be held on 3/24/10.)

Wednesday, March 17th – 10am to 2pm
How to Photograph your Child – Autumn Hull instructor $79
This is a special workshop Autumn teaches just for parents. She will show you how to capture those moments as you see them, by taking your camera out of those automatic settings that destroy your images. We will shoot indoors and out, in natural settings and in semi-posed situations. You will learn how to use your camera, including all those mysterious settings that you’ve probably never touched. We will show you how to use light to get the most flattering images of your child. We will also explore how you find the light and how to anticipate the moment. We will discuss how to shoot outside in any weather or lighting condition, plus much, much more. Learn how to preserve those moments before they slip away! This is a hands-on class, so please bring your camera to the workshop.

Photography 103 – Composition
Now that we’ve learned how to use your camera and light your shots, we’ll explore the basic rules of taking good pictures and when and how to break those rules. We will study traditional art, sculpture, film/video and photography to discover the secrets of good composition.

Food Photography and Styling – Aaron & Evelyn Cox instructors $129
Do you love food and photography? Imagine having your photos appear in a food and wine magazine or maybe you’d love to create your own cookbook. Come join us and learn how Santa Clarita residents, Aaron and Evelyn Cox, created their own European Cookbook from start to finish. You’ll learn exactly how to prepare a dish for print production and print publications. Get hands on experience with food preparation, table setups, and camera angles that make your mouth water. We’ll be testing your skills at the end of the workshop, with a TEAM Food Photo Shoot-off!!! The winners of the Food Photo Shoot-off will receive a FREE copy of Aaron and Evelyn’s Swiss Cookbook, “The Swiss Taste”. Please bring your camera as this workshop will include hands-on shooting.

We will start session 3 with a review of the assignment, sort out the mysteries and then dive back into the camera. Other topics will include color space, exposure controls, bracketing and whatever else time permits. So bring in that camera and let’s get down to what makes it work. This is a hands-on class, please bring your DSLR camera to class. This class is not geared toward point and shoot cameras. (Part 1 will be held on 3/8 and part 2 on 3/15/2010).

Still Life Photography, Lighting and Photoshop – Ted Dayton instructor (Fee included in Part 1) (Part 2 of a 2 part workshop)
Bring your laptop to edit and process the images taken in Part 1 on 3/16/10. Ted will critique each student’s images and offer clear suggestions sure to make you a better photographer the very next time you use your camera. At the heart of this demonstration are Ted’s methods for using Photoshop to isolate the colors, tones and zones for professional-looking results in these images. The techniques you learn are applicable to photos of all kinds. Please bring your laptop with Photoshop CS3 or CS4 loaded.

Photography 104 – Skillz: The Many Habits of Successful Photographers
Now that you have a foundation for the mad skillz you need to become a great photographer, we will explore the tips, tricks and techniques you can put into use every day to build on that foundation and improve your work. We will discuss everything from shooting habits, to motivational tricks, to what to keep in your gear bag(s) so you are always ready (and able) to take a great shot.

Mastering Event Photography – David Saffir instructor $119
Event photography can be a great moneymaker for you in your photography. Here are a few examples: retirement parties, baby showers, wedding anniversaries, and corporate celebrations just to name a few. How do you succeed at photographing dozens of people having a good time? This workshop will show you how. We will discuss the pre-event, the big day and post event. We will also talk about gear, processing and marketing.
In this workshop you’ll learn how to:
- Create your marketing message, sales strategy, product offering, and pricing
- Recruit customers and book events
- Scout the location, who to talk to on-site, and what to say
- Handle the pre-event meeting with your customer
- Developing a script for yourself
- Sign up event-goers for extra prints
- Filling orders, collecting payments and delivering prints, images and/or slideshows
