Off-Camera Flash – Dramatic Portraits with your Flash Outdoors – Sponsored by Honl Photo – Ron Brewer instructor $79
Taking good portraits outdoors can be very difficult, unless you know the simple steps to get your flash off-camera and move from bad to good light. Many people don’t like to use flash because it looks so bad, but you will learn how to set up and control your flash so that it looks like you didn’t use a flash at all. You will be amazed at how beautiful your portraits will look. You will learn how to use your flash outdoors in the mid-day sun as well as at sunset and still get professional looking portraits. This is a hands-on workshop starting in the studio and quickly moving outdoors where the instructor will demonstrate the surprisingly easy techniques and help you try it for yourself. Bring your DSLR camera, speedlight flash and cable/trigger (if you don’t have a flash or cable/trigger, we have loaners available) as we will be shooting outside today.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 1pm to 4:30pm
Studio Lighting Series: Hollywood and the “Film Noir” Look – David Saffir instructor $79
Learn how to construct a one, two, or three light set and create that classic, dramatic, Hollywood “film noir” look for male and female models. It’s a pattern of low key lighting, creating careful contrast between light and shadow – the use of hard lighting on a darker background can evoke a moody atmosphere and a sense of a past era. And it’s about black – deep, rich, black that creates a foundation for the rest of the image. This is a hands-on workshop, so the number of students will be limited. We’ll start from scratch; build our set up one part at a time using appropriate lighting, lighting controls, backgrounds, and the like. You will finish this class understanding the fundamentals of this important lighting technique. At the outset, we’ll shoot with the camera tethered to a 30 inch monitor screen, so we can all see how the shoot progresses. Going forward, each student will have an opportunity to shoot on their own, with support from the instructor. We will have a female model for all to photograph. Please bring your DSLR camera, a light meter if you have one, and an open mind. No laptops or flash equipment will be necessary.
Take both our lighting classes on October 16th, and receive a $10 discount.

(Part 2 will take place on location in the morning on 10/23 and Part 3 on 10/25/2010 in the classroom at the regular time).

How to Win at Print Competitions – David Green instructor $69
If photography is an epic poem, print competition is a sonnet: It has a structure, rules, and rhyme scheme all its own. In this workshop, award-winning photographer David Green shares his insights on what it takes to do well at print competition, and why sometimes even a great photo may not do well. We will discuss presentation, composition, balance, printing techniques, subject matter, naming, and all the other elements that go toward scoring a much-desired Award of Merit or even more.

HDR that doesn’t look like HDR – Ted Dayton instructor $69
If you love HDR Photography but you are getting tired of that amazing but unrealistic look, join Ted for this HDR class with a twist. Ted has developed a recipe for using the power of HDR without the look we have all come to know. This is a method he has perfected for use in architectural photography in particular but it can be applied to almost any other subject. Ted will also share several simple but powerful tips on image processing to help make these new HDR images especially beautiful. Please bring your camera, tripod (don’t forget!) and cable release. Also bring your laptop loaded with Photomatix. You can get a free 30 day trial at www.hdrsoft.com . If you purchase Photomatix, use the code SCVPHOTO15 for a 15% discount.

Saturday, November 6th - 9am to 12pm
Holga Photography - David Green instructor $129 Includes a Holga 120 camera, 5 rolls of film and a processing mailer.
The Holga is a plastic film camera (non-digital!) that has been growing in popularity. It is considered a “toy,” yet is used by professional photographers to make beautiful and unique images. It practically has a cult following among photographers eager to experience the joys and heartache of its distortion, light leaks, vignetting, blur and more. It is the ugly bulldog of cameras: So ugly, it becomes beautiful in a strange way. In this workshop, everyone gets a Holga!, Oprah-style. We then spend some time learning how to modify our cameras to make them a bit more reliable. (Happy accidents are a good thing. Unusable film is not.) Then we’ll shoot. Note: In order to have enough cameras on hand, deadline for signing up for this workshop is 5pm, Wednesday, November 3, 2010! Optional: A week or so following the class, we will meet at Peet’s coffee to review your images.
