NOVEMBER 2010 WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

Wednesday, November 3rd – 6:30pm to 9:30pm

No More Bad Pictures!  -  David Green instructor  $69

Do you go out shooting, then come home discouraged because your memory card is full of crappy shots? Do you get discouraged looking at photo magazines and print competitions because everyone else’s shots seem better than yours? Or maybe you are pretty happy with your work, but feel a little stalled on a plateau and want to jump-start your creative output. Do you feel as though you have the TECHNIQUES but not the INSPIRATION?   This workshop is for you.  In a mere three hours, we will explore techniques to find inspiration in your work, and uncork the champagne bottle of your creativity. We will learn tried-and-true techniques first described by Aristotle and refined and adapted by artists ever since.  We will do some exercises that will do more to unlock your creativity in 10 minutes than you would believe possible.  We will make a date with your Muse.  This is not a theoretical class. This is ALL about practical, doable skills that you can put into use immediately. This class gives you a map to becoming a better photographer, and starts you on the journey.

At the end of this workshop, you will know:

  • How to find inspiration “on tap”
  • How to develop your own style
  • Where to go when you are feeling blocked
  • How to sharpen your eye to see the hidden shots wherever you are

Bring a camera, any camera.

First 5 students to sign up get $5 off!  Mention this offer to receive the discount and act fast.

Saturday, November 6th -  9am to 12pm

Holga Photography -  David Green instructor   $129  Includes a Holga 120 camera, 5 rolls of film and a processing mailer.

The Holga is a plastic film camera (non-digital!) that has been growing in popularity. It is considered a “toy,” yet is used by professional photographers to make beautiful and unique images. It has a cult following among photographers eager to experience the joys and heartache of its distortion, light leaks, vignetting, blur and more. It is the ugly bulldog of cameras: So ugly, it becomes beautiful in a strange way. In this workshop, everyone gets a Holga!, Oprah-style. We then spend some time learning how to modify our cameras to make them a bit more reliable. (Happy accidents are a good thing. Unusable film is not.) Then we’ll shoot. Note: In order to have enough cameras on hand, deadline for signing up for this workshop is 5pm, Wednesday, November 3rd!  Optional: A week or so following the class, we will meet at Peet’s coffee to review your images.

Saturday, November 6th – 1pm to 4pm

Film Scanning 101 – David Saffir instructor  $69

Imagine that you’ve just gotten a brand new Holga, or that you’ve found a box full of slides and film that you had forgotten about. Now what?  Why, scan them, of course! Turn them into digital files that you can easily edit in Lightroom, Photoshop, Aperture, or another image editor.  Film scanning is not the horrible chore it’s made out to be. Scanning is no more difficult than processing a RAW file in Lightroom or Camera RAW. The controls, and the production goals, are similar. Do it yourself in only a few minutes, save some money, and have fun, too!  We’ll learn how to organize raw film or slides quickly and easily, choose the winners, and scan them in a way that keeps them organized and easy to find on your computer.   Better still, if you have a strong image, you’ll find that the print quality will be superb!  If you still have a decent flatbed scanner sitting around you can get started right away. If not, there’s bunches of them floating around for sale, many at low prices. Even the Epson flatbed series, which were at one time pretty costly, have come way down.  We’ll cover this from start to finish in about three hours – you should go home ready to start making scans and rescuing that incredible library you have stashed away in the corner of your office!   David Saffir is a professional photographer and printmaker. He’s been scanning film since long before digital cameras became widely used, and made dozens of award winning prints from originals scanned from 35mm, 120, and 4×5 film.

Take both the Holga workshop and the Film Scanning 101 workshop and get a $10 discount.

Wednesday, November 10th -  6:30pm to 9:30pm

Do it all in Camera RAW  -  David Green instructor   $69

For most photographers, Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) is a “rest stop” on the way to Photoshop. It is a place to do minor color correction, click “Auto,” click “OK” and then on to the big guns. What many photographers don’t know is that you can do almost ALL of your editing in Camera RAW without ever having to go into Photoshop!   With Adobe Camera RAW, you have the advantage of a non-destructive workflow (which means you can’t screw anything up, no matter how hard you try), and no increase in file size.  In this workshop, we will work on several images, including your own if you bring them. (Bring up to three images on a thumb drive or CD.)  We will review each of the panels of the Adobe Camera RAW application, and the often-unnoticed tool bar where a lot of power is hidden. We will talk about import and export options, and how to work with sub-par images from any camera.

At the end of this workshop, you will know:

  • How to take almost all of your images from start to finish in Camera RAW.
  • How to quickly work on big shoots with hundreds of images, without ever opening Photoshop.
  • How Adobe Bridge and ACR work together to give you control over your workflow.
  • Specialized Adobe Camera RAW techniques for landscape, portrait and studio photography.
  • How to use the power of Camera RAW with non-RAW (i.e. JPEG & TIFF) images.

Bring your laptop loaded with Adobe Camera RAW from CS4 or CS5. (Either Elements or Photoshop versions of ACR will work, but Elements is limited.)

First 5 students to sign up get $5 off!  Mention this offer to receive the discount and act fast.

Monday, November 15th –  6:30pm to 9pm

Basic DSLR Camera – Mel Carll instructor  (Part 2 of a 3 part workshop)

This 3 session workshop will focus only on the camera.  We will start session 2 from where we left off in session 1 with a review, then on to depth of field, lens selection and white balance.  This is a hands-on class, please bring your DSLR camera to class.  This class is not geared toward point and shoot cameras. (Part 1 will be held on 11/8 and Part 3 on 11/22/2010)

Tuesday, November 16th  – 6:30pm to 9:30pm

Architecture Photography – Ted Dayton instructor   $79

Spend an evening with photographer Ted Dayton and learn how the pros make beautiful photographs of buildings and interiors.  Ted will discuss many of the steps required for professional-looking images and will share his own methods for transforming those good images into stylish ones. Ted will cover lighting, camera angles, wide-angle and specialty lenses, panoramic photography for architecture, perspective corrections, HDR and fine tuning and  finishing in Photoshop.  Bring your camera and laptop and work side-by-side with Ted to fully process an image taken tonight using the Photoshop tools the pros use and follow along as he demonstrates a variety of methods for finishing them with personal style.

At the end of this workshop, you will know:

What settings work best with your camera to get quality night images.

  • How to deal with white balance at night.
  • How to paint with light to light your subject, or to create cool shapes in the camera.
  • How to take long time exposures.
  • How to shoot under the moon, or under streetlights.
  • How to use one strobe to be many strobes.

Monday, November 22st – 6:30pm to 9pm

Basic DSLR Camera – Mel Carll instructor (Part 3 of a 3 part workshop)

We will start session 3 with a review of the assignment, sort out the mysteries and then dive back into the camera.  Other topics will include color space, exposure controls, bracketing and whatever else time permits.  So bring in that camera and let’s get down to what makes it work.  This is a hands-on class, please bring your DSLR camera to class.  This class is not geared toward point and shoot cameras. (Part 1 will be held on 11/8 and part 2 on 11/15/2010).
